I'm just blown away, browsing through this guestbook. This is what immortality means, to have touched so many people. I was one of his classmates at LHS and a fan of his dad's columns in Field and Stream. I knew he had gone back to LHS to become the new Wilbur Cheever; then ran across the Brady Coyne mysteries; his has been a wonderful life to follow. I always enjoyed how he and Phil Craig shared their characters and their fishing. Obviously, Bill will be sorely missed by many, but, also obviously, his memory will live on.

I knew of Bill when I was a student at Lexington HS and he a teacher. I met Bill a few years later when he and my first husband played on the same softball team and we became friends. I rediscovered Bill when I discovered Brady Coyne nearly 20 years ago. No matter how many years passed, Bill was always warm and welcoming in getting caught up at book signings, in letters and emails. He was a gifted, caring, gracious gentleman. Brady has lost his creator and we have lost a wonderful friend and talent. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I was stunned and saddened to randomly open the website today (as I did every month or two) and find that Bill passed away in late July. My condolences to the entire Tapply family, both his mom and sister, whom I knew well in Lexington, as well as Vickie and all the children and stepchildren. Bill and I grew up as neighbors on Outlook Drive in Lexington and our families were friends for years. I was two years behind him at LHS, and always looked up to his scholarship and athletic achievements. His mysteries and our occasional communications on Guestbook will be sorely missed. Indeed, when I saw an ad for his first book in 1984 in the NYT Book Review, I wondered if this was the same Bill Tapply I grew up with - and indeed it was. I read all the books, and visited him at several book signings in the DC area and on the Cape, where my folks (now deceased) retired. He will no doubt be sorely missed by his family, his friends, and his dedicated readers, but his legacy will live on through his books. I now look forward to the last books this fall. They will have a special place on my bookshelf.
